HUMAN RIGHTS DAY AT FOUR FREEDOMS PARK, ROOSEVELT ISLAND
Human Rights Day was marked by a Flower laying ceremony at the Four Freedoms Park Roosevelt Island. The event was organized by the United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights. The theme for this year was to highlight 'Freedoms', recalling the four freedoms that underlie the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two major human rights covenants. In his "four freedoms speech" in 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt offered a vision. His wife, Eleonore was instrumental in helping that vision finds its way in human rights treaties. Both were instrumental in the creation of the United Nations, 70 years ago.
The guests included the UN Deputy Secretary-General, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, New York City's officials, Permanent Representatives to the UN, Civil Society representatives and students.
