Mujra and Madira

Mujra and Madira

The Indian classical dance form 'Kathak' transformed from being religious to sensuous when the Mughals invaded India. During this time, courtesans performed mujra (dance) for the rulers and other aristocrats in their mehfils (gatherings) while they sipped on madira (alcohol). The practice of mujra has almost died in India, but it is depicted is several Bollywood movies like Devdaas, Pakeezah, Umrao Jaan, Senapati, Mughal-e-Aazam.
